Kathmandu, August 1
A new book titled ‘Kheladi: From Struggle to Success’ written by senior sports journalist Bishnu Thapa was officially launched on Friday in the capital.
The book was released by Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakash Man Singh, who praised the initiative, saying, “Sports reflect the prosperity of a nation, and this book will serve as both a source of inspiration and a historical document for future generations.”
Member-Secretary of the National Sports Council, Tanklal Ghising, expressed his appreciation, noting that although news about athletes appears in newspapers, very few are compiled into books. He added that “such publications are important and should continue to preserve the stories of players’ struggles and successes.”
Rajiv Shrestha, President of the Nepal Rafting and Canoeing Association, congratulated Thapa, highlighting the book’s role in filling the documentation gap in Nepali sports history.
Deepak Shrestha, President of the National and International Players Association, emphasized that players’ emotional journeys deserve to be recorded in books, not just articles. Similarly, international badminton judge Deepak Thapa stressed that publishing such works should become a regular campaign.
Author Bishnu Thapa, who has over 20 years of experience in sports journalism and works at Annapurna Post, said the book covers the stories of nearly 60 athletes who have overcome hardships and achieved success at both national and international levels.
From Jit Bahadur KC, Nepal’s first international medalist, to Palesha Govardhan, who brought home a bronze from the 2024 Paris Paralympics, the book spans the journey of many key athletes. Thapa added, “Their sacrifices, dreams, and dedication should not be forgotten. This book turns newspaper stories into a lasting legacy.”
The 260-page book, published by Nepal Mala Media Pvt. Ltd., includes portraits of 77 athletes and aims to inspire the next generation of players and readers alike.
